Historical

The Despatch Creek Fishing Camp (Anglers Club) was purchased by Morris Baker of Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1946 and was established as a modest four cabin fishing camp, with some docks. Under the guidance and vision of Mr. Baker, Channels were dredged, docks built, land filled, roads made, and over 1,300 acres was acquired. An inn was built for Mr. Bakers guest, along with a coffee shop, gas station, water tower and a tidal swimming lagoon. In addition an airport, with a landing strip of 2,000 feet was built and dedicated on May 18-20, 1956; the Club was now accessible by land, sea and air.

Mr. Baker passed on in 1959, and under the stewardship of his sons, William and Roger Baker, recreational facilities were added, along with villas, golf courses, country clubs, homes, and its own dedicated employee housing, a subject of much discussion today.

Ownership was transferred to Harper Sibley Jr. and his partner Morris Burke in 1969 and the club officially became The Ocean Reef Club. Expansion was the game with a full time medical facility the Ocean Reef Chapel and other amenities.

The Ocean Reef Club – In the passing years the Ocean Reef Club has grown to become a self-contained community and private club dedicated to a sense of well-being amid tranquility and the enjoyment of friends and family. Assurance of a wholesome lifestyle for  children has always been and continues to be foremost among the communities goals. The atmosphere of ORC is relaxed yet sophisticated. Privacy is respected.
