What a final day at the Dragon Gold Cup 2015 at Kuehlungsborn. Constant wind at 12 to 15 knots, sunshine and a moderate wave.
Right from the start in a promising position was the Dane Jorgen Schoenherr with Christian A. Videbaek and Per Kloster, which itself could already win several times the Dragon Gold Cup. The team fought a close race with UAE 8 Yevgen Braslavetz, Sergey Timokhov and Alexandr Mirchuk. After the first cross led the Dane, at the first leeward mark again UAE 8, as the teams were for the second time at the windward mark Schoenherr sat back on top. On the target cross dominated the DEN 411.
The Briton Lawrie Smith GBR 801 with his crew Tim Tavinor and Joost Houweling not miss out on anything. A bit defensive but always in front of his direct competitors RUS 76 Dmitry Samokhin with his crew Andrey Kirilyuk and Aleksey Bushuev Smith ranked – like yesterday – as the sixth in the participants field. Dmitry Samokhin seemed to be nervous. He concluded the final race from the eleventh. That was enough for Smith for the overall victory with 16 points ahead RUS 76.
A bit luck had the German professional team with Thomas Müller, Vincent Hoesch and Marc Pickel. Because of the disqualification of NED 412 and their eighth place in the sixth and final race, the Germans pushed onto the bronze medal.
BMW Yachtsport Ambassador and professional sailor Markus Wieser finished the Dragon Gold Cup as seventh overall.
“The regattas Dragon Grand Prix Germany and the Dragon Gold Cup was a resounding success. We had great weather, great conditions and a strong team consisting of volunteers ashore and offshore. These were the ingredients for a perfect menu that has tasted especially the sailors, but also the tourists who visited Kuehlungsborn during the past few days,” said Peter Menzel, chairman of the Segelclub Kühlungsborn.
Also, the race director Christian Haake was full of praise: “Nine days these great races, this great team: More simply does not work – just sensational,” he concluded.
