East Wells: Bimini’s last hope

Bimini is facing a massive environmental disaster in the form of overdevelopment.

The Bimini archipelago, a ecological wonderland, consists of three beautiful islands located approximately 50 miles (80 kilometres) due east of Miami, Florida. The once indigenous Taíno spoke of a land called “Beimini” where the crystal clear waters of the fountain of youth could be found. Inspired by the beauty of these emerald isles, Ernest Hemingway penned his famous sea trilogy, “Islands in the Stream.” here. While years later Bonefish Ray’s mom made her famous Bimini Bread from her modest island home.

Today a Malaysian consortium, the Genting Group, has won approval to bring up to 500,000 tourists a year to these pristine waters. The development consist of a casino, luxury homes, a hotel, marina, and a golf coarse that has/will be built within an environmentally sensitive property. Through the process of this overdevelopment coral reefs have been damaged and essential mangrove forest have been destroyed.

Halophytes, also called Mangroves, have protected these shorelines from damaging storm and hurricane winds, waves, and floods for centuries. These forest are considered the most productive and biologically complex ecosystems on Earth. They are important feeding grounds for thousands of species and support a diverse food web. They maintain water quality and clarity by filtering pollutants and trapping sediments originating from land.

Just to the east of the development lies East Bimini or East Wells, as it is known to locals. Bimini’s only remaining pocket of pristine habitat. The Genting Group development is growing and will be the final blow to the people of Bimini and the ecosystem on which they depend on if nothing is done.

A new Bahamian government has just been voted into power. This video is an appeal from the Biminites for the declaration of a Marine Protected Area (MPA) that will protect their environment. We call on the Commonwealth of The Bahamas and the Genting Group developers to halt any additional development that will destroy East Wells. A critical nursery area for all marine life in this region of the Caribbean.
