Golden Globe Race – Rescue attempt underway

A multinational rescue effort is underway to try to reach an injured sailor whose yacht is disabled in the South Indian Ocean.

Eighty-two days into the Golden Globe Race, India’s Abhilash Tomy aboard his boat “Thuriya,” a 32-foot / 9.8m William Atkin designed Masthead ketch, replica of Sir Robin Knox-Johnston’s original winner Suhaili, suffered severe back injury during a Southern Indian Ocean storm.

“ROLLED. DISMASTED. SEVERE BACK INJURY. CANNOT GET UP”

“CANT WALK. MIGHT NEED STRETCHER.”

“CAN MOVE TOES. FEEL NUMB. CAN’T EAT OR DRINK. TOUGH 2 REACH GRAB BAG.”

The Maritime Rescue Coordination Center in Canberra, Australia, is in charge of the rescue operation. For further updates view organizers website: Golden Globe Race
