On this Day (March 10) – Columbia – Defender of the America’s Cup

NEW YORK, March 10, 1902 — lt is stated that J. P. Morgan announced at the reception given to Prince Henry by the New York Yacht club that he will put Columbia, the America’s cup defender of 1901, in commission and send her across the ocean to race against anything afloat, boat for boat.

Under boat-to-boat conditions all question of class is waived so that Emperor William may have a chance to race his new Yankee schooner yacht Meteor against the America’s cup holder.
