ACROSPIRE II is a 25 foot class yacht built in 1911 by Charlie Peel for Joe White of Joe White Maltings, Ballarat. She was first seen by APYC members at a 1912 Lake Colac regatta, this beautiful yacht caused quite a stir. Joe White’s malting business grew and he moved to Melbourne in 1914 bringing the yacht with him and joining APYC. Joe did not stay long, he had ‘Acrospire III’ built and joined St Kilda YC, ‘Acrospire II’ under new ownership raced very successfully on the lake until 1927 when she was sold and went back to Ballarat where she raced for many years on Wendouree finally ending up in 1971 lying waterlogged and up for sale. Two esteemed members of APYC went up to Ballarat and purchased her for $50, she was in poor condition but members restored her and carried on the tradition of racing against ‘Valdera’ from Ballarat YC. She was extensively rebuilt in the 90’s and is still sailed by members of the club. The match racing between the two clubs has been on hold while ‘Valdera’ is restored to sailable condition, these two are possibly the only 25 footers left in Australia.
