Rendez-vous 2017 – The Tall Ships Regatta

An exciting transatlantic race of 7,000 nautical miles taking place over the course of five months in six countries. At their arrival in the Gulf of St Lawrence, the Tall Ships will start the Guest Port Program portion of their trip and will stop in more than 35 Canadian ports.

The Tall Ships Regatta comprises five legs of varying lengths and degrees of difficulty.

For each leg, there is a main rallying point where thousands of visitors can take part in the many activities organized for the event.

Leg #1

Event from April 29 to May 1, 2017
Sines, Portugal

Sines is a major port city on the Atlantic Ocean having no depth or height restrictions to access. As well as being Portugal’s biggest port, Sines is the birthplace of the navigator Vasco de Gama (1460 – 1524), who charted the sea route to India.

Event from June 1 to 5, 2017
Bermuda

Bermuda regularly hosts Tall Ships Regatta, having hosted five such races in the past. This particular race will be a special occasion as Bermuda is to be designated sailing capital of the Atlantic. At the same time, it will also host the 35th America’s Cup, presented by Louis Vuitton.

Event from June 17 to 22, 2017
Boston, United States

For its participation in RDV 2017, Boston plans to set up educational programs focusing primarily on international and American maritime history. Crew members will also be asked to meet with local kids to share their shipboard experiences and to talk about their country of origin, their culture and more.

 


 

Leg #4

Events from June 30 to August 20, 2017
Guest Port program
Canada

At their arrival in the Gulf of St Lawrence, the Tall Ships will start the Guest Port Program portion of their trip and will stop in more than 35 Canadian ports. The trainees will have the opportunity to explore the beautiful provinces of East Canada: Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Québec. Other Tall Ships coming from the Great Lakes in Ontario will also land in Québec City and Lévis.

 

 

Leg #5

Event from July 18 to 23, 2017
Québec City and Lévis
Canada

The jewel in the crown of the RDV 2017 Tall Ships Regatta is the arrival of the international fleet into Québec and Lévis up the St Lawrence River. As well as the tremendous Tall Ships, thousands of visitors from across Canada and internationally, will enjoy free land activities, colourful crew parades and street artist performances.

 

 

Leg #6

Event from July 29 to August 1, 2017
Halifax, Canada

Host city of the last portion of the Tall Ships Regatta going to Le Havre in France. The best of Nova Scotia will be showcased through music, culinary, historical and family friendly experiences on both sides of the harbour and in outport communities around the province. Nova Scotia’s sailing ambassador Bluenose II will be front and centre during the event, highlighting their seafaring history and sail training passion.

 


 

Leg #7

Event from August 31 to September 3, 2017
Le Havre, France

The final leg of the RDV 2017 Tall Ships Regatta takes the ships to Le Havre, Normandy’s biggest city and the largest container shipping port in France. Le Havre owes its prosperity to the 19th-century shipping industry and to the transatlantic ship lines linking Le Havre and New York. In addition to hosting the Tall ships, Le Havre will be celebrating its 500th anniversary in 2017.
