2015 Museum of Yachting (MoY) Overall Winner – WEATHERLY

Officine Panerai announced the winner of Newport’s 36th annual Museum of Yachting (MoY) Classic Yacht Regatta, the final stage of the North American Panerai Classic Yacht Challenge (PCYC), which took place over Labor Day week-end at historic Fort Adams State Park.

WEATHERLY was presented with the coveted PCYC price Panerai Radiomir 1940 3-days Acciaio 47mm (PAM00514) watch from the events 11 year sponsor Officine Paneria.

WEATHERLY, Her Historic Place in History

US 17 was designed by Philip L. Rhodes, and built by the Luders Marine Construction Company, at Stamford, Connecticut, of steel frames with mahogany planking  for the Mercer syndicate. Weatherly was one of three boats constructed for the 1958 America’s Cup,  she was eliminated in the Defender Trials, but her day would soon come.

Receiving more letters of recommendations than any other nominee in history, Emil “Bus” Mosbacher, Jr. was quickly admitted to the New York Yacht Club, and at around the same time was selected to be the skipper of WEATHERLY for the defense of the 1962 America’s Cup. Through the brain trust of Bus, Rhodes and Luders, a series of significant changes were made including a new keel, shorter bow, all alloying her to stand up better in a breeze.

Winning the defender selection trials against COLUMBIA, EASTERNER and NEFERTITI,  on the 25th of August 1962, the NYYC selected WEATHERLY to defend the Cup against Australian challenger Gretel

With the sound of 5 blast from the destroyer JOSEPH P. KENNEDY, JR, with President John F. Kennedy and his wife in attendance WEATHERLY would go on to win the 62′ Cup 4 races to 1 loss, winning the last race  by 26 seconds, the smallest margin of victory in the race’s history.
