US Coast Guard gives away 1,200 Christmas trees

Chicago’s Christmas Tree Ship arrived at the Navy Pier this past Friday morning the 6th of December 2019.

CHICAGO (WLS) — More than 1,200 families are able to decorate their homes for the holidays thanks to the U.S. Coast Guard and Chicago’s maritime community.

The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw traveled south from Sheboygan, Wisconsin, with the special mission to deliver 1,200 Christmas trees two weeks ahead of Christmas to families in need.

This is inspiring tradition dates back to “Captain Santa” who sailed a three-masted schooner on Lake Michigan 100 years ago, delivering each December thousands of Christmas trees to Chicago families straight from the deck of his ship tied up at the Clark Street pier. Scenes are from the 50-minute documentary film on DVD “Chicago’s Christmas Tree Ship.”
