Mylne was born in Glasgow, Scotland, was a yacht designer, and founded A Mylne & Co. in 1896, which still exist to this day.
Alfred Mylne apprenticed with the Scottish yard Napier, Shanks and Bell, and later worked as a draftsman, and apprentice with George Lennox Watson, where he collaborated with in drawing up the plans of the Royal Yacht “Britannia”, which was first owned by the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) and which later passed to his son, King George V.
Mylne set up his own office in 1896, which to this date makes Mylne & Co. the world’s oldest yacht design business in continuous production. Instrumental in creating the most successful yacht handicap rules of all time the “International Metre Rule”.
