Historical:

Rafale was designed by Ingenieur Lomakin and built by Chantier de la Liane in Boulogne France (near Calais) in 1935 for Monsieur L. Babin from Nantes under Lloyds requirements.

Current Owner – From what I know she was kept in the Mediterranean with home port Sanary until the seventies. Also as a charter yacht. Then she stayed in the Golfe de Morbihan up until the eighties when a boatbuilder from England bought her and restored her.

She still spend the years in Cornwall and Bretagne until we sailed her to Germany. She at least crossed the Atlantic once, and participated at the Brest Festival in 2000 as well as the 2001 Americas Cup Jubilee.

What sets her apart from other yachts of her time and size is that she is almost flush decked, but has a full cruising interior. Kept over the years and not ripped out in the seventies to be replaced by plywood-teak-application wonders.

Historical:

W-Class Yachts and Stephens / Waring & White Yacht Design have a relationship that extends back more than a decade, when W-Class president Donald Tofias asked Joel White in 1997 to design a fleet of 76′ world-class yachts to bring back big-boat one-design racing to the Eastern Seaboard. The W-76 was followed by smaller sister W-46 designed by White’s protege Robert Stephens following Joel White’s death.

Like today’s current crop of cutting-edge race boats, the W-37 is lightweight, relatively beamy, with a plumb stem and near-vertical transom. But where out-and-out race boats sacrifice grace and beauty in the name of performance, designer Stephens Waring and White have carefully crafted the bow and stern to show subtle curves and attractive camber.

For a time Thor was owned by Charles Dana, New York Yacht Club Commodore and Newport Shipyard owner. Mr. Dana donated Thor to Sail Martha’s Vineyard in 2016, making his announcement that year during the Vineyard Cup awards ceremony. Telling the crowd his family had many happy summers of sailing aboard Thor. “She’s a very special boat,” he said. “We salute what you all do here. We love what you’re doing.”

In 2019, Sail MV listed Thor for sale at which time Priscilla Thurber Constants, daughter of A. Edward Thurber, Jr., was alerted to Thor’s listing by Ian McCurdy. In August of 2019 Priscilla took ownership of Thor, bringing in a partner in George J. Ellis. After 37 years Thor was back in Thurber ownership and back in Oyster Bay.
