Restoration

Mariette of 1915 first visited the Pendennis Falmouth facility in February 2010 for a pre-summer refit and returned for minor works in Spring 2012 to prepare for the Pendennis Cup.

The beautiful schooner arrived back in Falmouth in autumn 2017 for a more extensive refit season which was carried out in close partnership with the crew. The on-deck and external scope of work saw her deck and sub deck replaced entirely, reinforced throughout and beams re-faired. Upstands were replaced with stainless steel and all but two deckhouses were removed, re-varnished and put back into position. Metal repairs to the hull and structure involved re-fairing and anti-fouling works while the crew re-varnished the mast and spars.

Internally the saloon saw a new flue installed for the wood burner and headlining fully replaced while the guest and owner’s cabin were renewed with carpet throughout, including an update of all electrical fixtures. The new engine room layout was the result of modifications to allow for better access and drainage. Full navigational and communications systems were upgraded along with new fresh water tanks, fuel, bilge lines and fire mains.

Working in close partnership with the crew, the crew area was given a complete overhaul that saw all internal steel surfaces painted and the AC, domestic fresh water and grey systems replaced. The captain’s cabin and galley were given a complete re-design including refurbishment of all deck head panels throughout.

Mariette of 1915 was redelivered in spring 2018 when the Pendennis team bid a fond farewell to her Owner and crew, bringing an end to her most comprehensive refit to date.

Bruce King Comments

This design was based to a large extent on our previous design ALEJANDRA. ALEJANDRA seems to have become one of the most admired of our previous designs in this size range and was utilized as a starting reference for this yacht. While her traditional appearance speaks for itself, her underbody is more contemporary with a separated keel and rudder. V sections and moderate displacement provide for a fast hull, with sea kindly motions. The usual slamming into headseas and quick jerky motion of lighter displacement boats, particularly those having shallow flat sections, is nonexistent. The aft sections of the underbody are filled out to reduce flow separation and increase the prismatic coefficient. This reduces drag at the higher speed-length ratios, allowing greater speeds to be reached. As with all large sailboats, draft is a critical issue. In order to increase the effective draft, while maintaining the actual draft, the fin keel is fitted with winglets. A special effort was also made to reduce CLR shift with varying heel angle. This is in order to minimize the need for constant helm corrections in variable wind speeds. The result being, a boat that takes care of herself, without the need for intense concentration by her helmsperson (or autopilot).

Royal Huisman comments

…a classic Bruce King design with long overhangs and a low freeboard to accentuate the classic sheer. The owner knew exactly what he wanted, who the designer would be and the man to do the interior. After a tour of various shipyards the trail stopped after the visit to the Huisman yard.

Everything was in place. Bruce King, for the design, Dick Young for the interior and the Royal Huisman Shipyard for the build. The design has settled at 40 m/130 ft as a cutter rigged sloop. Although the rig details have to be decided the owner likes uncomplicated sail handling configurations, but for sure Rondal will be on hand to provide the winch power and the deck hardware. One interesting feature of the accommodation layout is a clever arrangement for the owners suite. Traditionally placed aft the usual owners cockpit has been replaced with a small open-plan style doghouse which creates a two level suite. Family members can walk up into the doghouse and sit in comfort and privacy and away form the elements. RHS

Historical:

Margaret Rintoul by John Brooks

Margaret Rintoul (Sail No. 353) is a beautiful 44’ yawl designed by Phillip Rhodes. Built in Sydney in 1948 by Ted Haddock for Austin Edwards, Margaret Rintoul has a carvel-planked Kauri timber hull with a long keel and classic lines featuring an overhanging stem and overhanging transom.

The original spruce main mast has been replaced with an oregon one designed by Alan Payne. The mizzen mast has been replaced several times over the years and is also constructed of Oregon. Margaret Rintoul was a consistent performer in many ocean races on the east coast in the 1950s, winning several races including the Montague Island race in record time in 1951.

The yacht was 2nd on handicap in the Sydney to Hobart in 1949 and won the Sydney to Hobart race line honours in 1950 and again in 1951 when she set a race record.

Margaret Rintoul continues her adventures to this day. Owned by RSYS Life Member Bruce Gould since 1980, she is a familiar sight cruising on Sydney Harbour or on Pittwater and competing regularly in veterans races, the RSYS Friday night Twilight series and in the RSYS Annual Cruise.

As a classic yacht, it is appropriate that Margaret Rintoul’s regular crew members (unkindly known as “Dad’s Army”) are older than the boat.

Historical:

Marga was designed by C.O. Liljegren and built by Hästholm Boatyard in 1910, for Swedish Diplomat, Consul Fredrick Forsberg.

Two years after Marga’s first commission, three months after the Titantic disaster, and two years before World War I, the Games of the V Olympiad were held in Stockholm, Sweden, between the 5th day of May and 22nd day of July 1912. Meantime off the coast of Nynäshamn, Sweden on the Baltic Sea, twenty-eight sailors, on 4 boats, from 3 nations entered and competed for the Gold in the 10 metre class. Captain Fred Wilhelm Forsberg, his crew Bertil Bothén, Bjorn Bothén, Erik Lindén, Arvid Perslow, Erik Waller, and Bertel Juslén raced during beautiful sunny days, but in very light conditions. Unfortunately after two races Marga did not medal and came in last place. The other Swedish contender, ‘Kitty’ took gold, followed after a sail-off, by Nina (Finland) and Gallia II (Russia) respectively.

Historical

At the end of 1925, the Hamburg merchant Dr. Roderich J. Schlubach commissioned a vessel to be built at Abeking & Rasmussen. The 30-qm Schärenkreuzer X 14 (today G 14) upon completion in May 1926 was named “MARAMA V,” derived from the word ‘malama’ a widespread Polynesian word for ‘moon’ or ‘light’. It may also be the name of a Cook Island lunar deity, the goddess of light.

In just one season, the NRV member was not only successful with this ship in various regional regattas, but also won Kiel Week 1926. In the end, he also received the particularly rare “Kaiser Prize” for the first and second placements without exception. Shortly thereafter, he was able to secure the second prize of the Royal Baltic Cup before Stockholm. To this day it is rumored that he was clubmate Prince Heinrich v. Preussen let go ahead at the finish in Sandhamn.
