Planet Sail – They’ve done it! In just one season the Kiwis have managed to set a new land speed record with ‘Horonuku’, their wing masted land speed machine.
The new record breaking speed of 222.4kph, (which is subject to official confirmation), was set in 22knots of breeze on Lake Gairdner, South Australia.
Pilot Glenn Ashby’s record breaking run beats that of the former speed record older Richard Jenkins in Greenbird in which he raised the speed bar to 126.1 mph (202.9 km/h) in 2009.
Given that this is the team’s first attempt at the land speed record, the Kiwi achievement is very impressive, yet according to Ashby this is just the start.
“For sure there is a cause for a celebration, but this isn’t the end. We know we can go faster, so we plan to.”
