Athens was owned by TP Burgess (my great grandfather) from 1911 thru 1915. He sold her in 1915 to Mr Miller from San Fransisco. Miller made trip through Panama Canal in 1915 and up tp SF. He raced her there and Athene was destroyed in 1941. I have lots of photos, silver, etc from life aboard. Burgess purchased 198 foot schooner Karina in 1913 and proceeded to take family to St Petersburg and to Greece in separate years. Have china, photos, silver, and other props from this yacht as well.

    • My Great Grandfather was on SY Athene, he sailed from Greenock, Scotland bound for Argentina, however reports were that the boat had floundered and that he was declared drowned at sea. I don’t have much information of the event except it was reported in the Greenock Telegraph at the time. My Great Grandfather was John Buchanan Johnston. If you have any further information on the boat I would be glad to hear from you.

    • HI I am Carl Miller from Hawi, HI. My Grandfather was Carlton Miller and his voyage from New London to San Diego in 1915 was his honeymoon cruise with my Grandmother Delphina. She kept a detailed log of the voyage which we go printed, I too have silver and china and vast collection of photos and papers from Athene. I would be happy to share notes and photos and original articles in Rudder and Yachting about the voyage, the 1928 Honolulu Race as Talayha, and her demise off Miami. Thanks fir creating the page about Athene in this website, I will join and contribute.
It would be fun to compare notes and I hope you will get in contact with me.
