The 512 is Hunt Yachts entry into the field of Spirit of Tradition daysailers. She is a development of the 510, which Ray Hunt designed in 1945 as a large version of his successful 210 class. The sharpie-type hull, originally intended for plywood construction, is well-suited to contemporary cored composite construction, and will be well within the capabilities of amateurs and small custom yards. As drawn, she is a simple and slightly old-fashioned boat, with minimal interior and systems, and a deep and comfortable cockpit. Keel and rudder have been modernized from the original, while retaining the original’s raked keel and skeg rudder in order to increase directional stability.
And like the original, she will be fast. Ray Hunt liked to tell the story of racing against the 72’ yawl “Bolero” which was manned by a large and active crew tending multiple sails, while he, with his wife as sole crew, relaxed in the cockpit and kept pace mile after mile. The new version will provide the same relaxed, simple and rapid sailing, and provide it in an economical package.
