27 DECEMBER 2012: MAJOR REFIT FOR CLASSIC SAILBOAT ‘ALERT’
Claasen Shipyards is an experienced yard with a well-filled order portfolio. One of its current projects is the refit of the classic sailboat Alert, which was first launched in 1948. This is a unique project due to the yacht’s rich history and emotional value to the owner. Claasen Shipyards has already been involved in the construction of three J-class yachts in recent years, reinforcing its position as a specialist in classic sailyachts. Top quality is assured by building entirely in-house, including the aluminium hull. This approach also results in an extremely flexible delivery programme.
The owner of Alert is a passionate sailor who has participated in many regattas with his F-class racing yacht (built by Claasen) and professional crew. Based on the owner’s satisfaction with the quality of the 115-ft Firefly and his collaboration with Claasen Shipyards, the client decided to commission the yard to perform a refit on his pleasure yacht Alert as well.
Alert is a wooden s-bottomed classic sailboat built in 1948 and designed by Philip Rhodes. The owner has also entered Alert in various regattas with friends, increasing the emotional attachment he feels for this classic vessel. With this in mind, there will be no fundamental changes to the construction or layout of the yacht. The plan is to restore her to the as-new condition she was in when launched in 1948.
Claasen Shipyards will fully restore the wooden hull and resolve any exterior issues. The yard will also replace several frames within the construction of the yacht. The deck including the saloon and superstructure will be removed entirely and later replaced in original condition. The mast, running rigging and sails will also be renewed. All elements included, Claasen Shipyards will return this stunning classic yacht to pristine condition.
Claasen clients choose to partner with the yard due to its professional employees and top-quality yachts as well as the transparent working methods and excellent after-sales service.
