Knud Reimers originally designed the Swede 55 in 1975 to be built out of fiberglass, so when Steve White contacted Reimers in the mid 1990s he told him he wanted to build the Swede 55 out of wood. Reimers made changes to the original design including deepening the keel and incresing her ballast. After 7,000 hours of labor, VORTEX was launched in 1990
