Rainbow was commissioned in 1934, by Harold Vanderbilt, and was built at the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company, in Bristol, Rhode Island. The name Rainbow was used, in the wake of the depression, symbolizing good fortune. Rainbow was selected to defend the America’s Cup August 31, 1934, and after loosing the first two races to Endeavour, won the remaining four races to win the America’s Cup. Six years later Rainbow in 1940 was scrapped at Lawley Shipyard for $12,000
