WoodenBoat Magazine Publisher Carl Cramer Retiring After 26-1/2 years

On the day before April Fools Day 2014, the magazine’s publisher will officially retire to pursue his passion “to go boating everyday; back to building some boats.”

Carl a lifelong boater, who grew up in California, moved to Maine in 1964 to attend Bowdoin College. After leaving school to pursue a career in yacht design, boat building and boat repair, he opened shop as a yacht designer in 1974. After limited success, Carl joined WoodenBoat in 1987, and he is the founding publisher of Professional BoatBuilder, which made its debut in 1989.

In retirement Carl plans to use the knowledge and skills gained after all his years at Woodenboat, in building “Ankle Deep,” the last boat Uffa Fox designed at age 74, and will be hopefully be the first of many boatbuilding projects, Carl will undertake for personal enjoyment.

Living within one mile, Carl will still be able to see his long time friends at WoodenBoat, considering them to be his extended family. So we all look forward to seeing Carl Sail his International 210, and on days without wind, power boating, possibly down the ICW.
