Newport Beach Recycle Guide

Does the stuff in the bin, just go away!

Not keeping your recycling “clean” will result in your recyclables being rejected and those potential resources being lost. What does this mean… listen to the above audio clip and please recycle the right stuff, use the below guide for what is acceptable to recycle in your community Newport Beach, California.

Newport Beach Residential Recycling

(California cities and counties must divert 75 percent of their waste from landfills by 2020) – In compliance with the State-mandated recycling goals, the City contracts with CR&R to transport all City-collected solid waste to a materials recovery facility (MRF) where the waste is sorted. The MRF is uniquely designed to separate and recover recyclable materials from unsorted (commingled) household waste. This process eliminates the need for additional containers and separate collection pick up normally associated with residential recycling programs. Even though residents are not required to separate their recyclables, you are encouraged to seal wet refuse in bags to prevent contamination of newsprint.

CR&R provides carts in three different sizes for trash (black lid) and recycling (blue lid). The following types of items can be placed in the recycling cart, however, all materials deposited in the trash cart will be sorted at the MRF for recyclables.

Plainly, recycling is more important than ever.

Fortunately, doing the right thing is easy–and it can make you money. There are more than 1,500 recycling centers that offer cash refunds all across the state. Many communities also have curbside recycling. Commercial businesses (and multifamily residential dwellings of five units or more) are now required by law (AB 341, Chapter 476, Statutes of 2011) to arrange for recycling services if they generate more than four cubic yards of commercial solid waste. And if your office, school or gym doesn’t have a recycling program, we’ll give you the simple tools you’ll need to start one.

Recycling Basics

What. Almost every bottle and can you use can be recycled. Look at the label for the universal recycle symbol and the words CA CASH REFUND or CA CRV.* Containers with these markings are good to go in your curbside bin and will be accepted at the recycling center. For more information about the CRV program, check out our Frequently Asked Questions.

*Other acceptable labels include “California Redemption Value,” “CA Redemption Value” or “California Cash Refund.” You get the idea.
