The New York Yacht Club were looking for a new one-design class, to replace the old (designed 1905) Herreshoff New York 30s, S&S won the design competition, and was selected against competing designs by Alden and Nicholas Potter Twenty boats were built by Nevins of City Island at a cost of $11,000 each. In Olin Stephen’s words “We set out to design a good cruiser/racer with good all-around form, guided by the lines of Dorade, Stormy Weather and Edlu, and emphasized seaworthiness rather than around-the-mark agility.”
