the XXV Illes Balears Clàssics Regatta comes to conclusion
Congratulations to Marigan proclaimed overall champion. Argos, Cippino and January Sails have won in their respective classes. The wind has risen to 15 knots providing exciting competition.
The Marigan crew were the overal winners of the XXV Illes Balears Regatta that concluded today at the Club de Mar Mallorca. Shipowner Tim Liesenhoff, skipper and ‘conservative’ of this boat launched in 1898, collected three prizes: the absolute winner, the one in his category and the one of the best-ranked centenary ship. The latter consisted of a bust of the Spanish sailor Juan Sebastián Elcano, a piece contributed by the Commission of the Fifth Centenary of the first circumnavigation.
The remaining winners of the regatta were the Argentine Cippino (1949), in Bermudian Era; the American Argos (1964), in Classics, and the January Sails (RI Classics).
The awards ceremony put an end to the XXV Illes Balears Clàssics Regatta. The competition brought together 37 classic and vintage vessels from nine countries. The event was attended, among others, by Borja de la Rosa, president of the Club de Mar Mallorca; Carlos Pérez-Urruti, Marine Corps Brigadier General; Joaquín Pita da Veiga, admiral of the Navy; Manuel Nadal, commodore and race director; José Luis Arrom, general director of the Club de Mar, and Emilio Feliu, president of the Protests Committee.
In his closing speech, the president of the Club de Mar Mallorca said: “The Illes Balears Clàssics is very special because it represents the values of our club, where we think that modernity is built on the experience and deep respect for the legacy of those that have preceded us. Classic and vintage ships are a symbol of our entity and that is why we wanted to bet heavily on shipowners who, with passion and effort, preserve and keep alive the naval and maritime heritage of their respective countries.”
