Sheldrake & Cara Mia on Classic Boat Magazines Shortlist

Two of Gannon and Benjamin’s Marine Railway’s recent projects are on the 2016 shortlist of Classic Boat Magazine best boats of 2015. To place your vote for the 2016 awards use the following link.

SHELDRAKE

The 85th of Nat Benjamin’s designs built by Gannon & Benjamin Marine Railway, was commissioned by Steve and Maureen Corkery, of Shelter Island, N.Y.  Sheldrake is a gaff sloop daysailer with a clubfoot jib. She is 19 feet long on deck and about six and a half feet wide at the beam.

CARA MIA

Is a 1905 (New York 30) N.G. Herreshoff designed and built yacht. She is number 14 of eighteen boats that were originally built for members of the New York Yacht Club, ownership was decided by lot and the contract price was set at $4,200 delivered.

All hulls were double-planked above the waterline, and single planked below on oak frames. All eighteen were delivered and equipped with 88 separate items, all of which were required to be on board for racing purposes except one anchor and rode, which was not required during racing.

CARA MIA was recently restored by Gannon and Benjamin Marine Railway, undergoing a traditional restoration, that included deck restoration/re-canvassing, a restored and refit cabin top, and much interior and exterior work, and lowering of the ballast.
